Podcasting

I think podcasts are the real social media. Some cool Pew research found that people who listen to podcasts do it to learn and actually make positive lifestyle choices. All without needing to leave snarky, divisive comments. See what I mean? It’s way more social!

I started the Nature Junkie Radio podcast because our relationship with nature is broken and needs help. At the same time, the science is clear - the mental health and planet health benefits of nature connection are off the charts great for us! Yet, we don’t tap into nature for these benefits the way we do with nutrition, exercise, mindfulness and sleep. But we can, so I took matters into my own hands.

I interview scientists, action sports athletes, artists, brand leaders, and Nature Junkies from all walks of life to share the science, wisdom, and radness of nature to help replenish your stoke.

Writing

Some wise dude once said, “How do I know what I think until I read what I write?” Writing is how I make sense of the world (inner and outer!) and brew up new ideas, often over a shift your noggin sideways cuppa French roast. I’m also a surfer, so I love a good yarn.

Recently I’ve been channeling my writing energy into surf publications like The Surfer’s Journal, Local Break, blogging for Nature Junkie, penning stories on Medium, and writing a book on nature connection.

My brand copywriting has permeated the ads, packaging, press releases, websites, and social media of brands like Kashi, Bear Naked, RationAle, Pure Organic, and so many more for the last two decades.

Photography

I’ve always taken photos with my minds eye. I’ve also been surfing since I was a grom, so when I picked up a camera and hopped in the ocean, it felt intuitive. I just had to figure out how to work all those stupid knobs! Thankfully, I did.

Since that moment, my love of water photography expanded into the natural landscapes of the mountains, forests, deserts, and the cosmic spell of the night sky.

My photography has been featured in magazines like Local Break, art shows, the Global Surf calendar, the Hippy Tree calendar, along with printed pieces in halfway decent living rooms around the world. Yours could be next!

TV + Film + Speaking

As much as I love being being behind the lens pressing the shutter, I’m a ham in front of the camera too.

As a former professional snowboarder, I featured in a number of snowboard films like Begin, Snack Something, Gas Money, and In Search of the Holy Grail. It was an honor to share the screen with some of my heroes and fellow riders during an era when the progression of tricks and equipment were exploding daily. I can still smell the smoke of melting Ptex when I hear a Pennywise song.

While at Kashi, I starred in a their national TV commercials and became a media-trained spokesperson for the brand, which led to a number of segments on live news, scripted, and unscripted programs like the Discovery Channel’s “Get Fresh with Sara Snow,” “The National Body Challenge,” The Food Network’s “Unwrapped,” “The Secret Life of…,” and The Sundance Channel’s “Grains of Change” series.

Recently, I’ve been giving talks on the benefits of nature connection for mental health and how to build brands that matter.
